I spent more time at gas stations, specifically Circle K, than anywhere with a roof and my name on it. Fluorescent lights at 3am were my chandelier. The bathroom with no working lock was my "clean-up" room. I knew every clerk by their customer service and people skills (most didn't card me, I had no ID card), every energy drink that mixed best with vodka. I’d post up inside my car on pump #7, pretending I had somewhere to be. I'd be mixing drinks inside a thirst buster styrofoam cupconstantly looking for a pig to roll up and give me a DUI and/or drug charge.
The regulars knew. The tweakers knew. The drunks knew. The hookers knew. We all just… existed there. Life was measured by shift changes, not days. $1.29 hot dogs. Torch lighters. Parking-lot conversations that felt safer than going home. It wasn’t glamorous — it was survival.
