I (Kami) spent two years stalking a woman in recovery. Her name was Christin Day, from Sunnyslope-ish, AZ. She didn’t know. To this day, 2024, she still doesn't know. I wasn’t ready, but I was desperate to understand how she looked so… free. I’d watch her at meetings at The Spot. I wasn’t sober enough to attend, at coffee shops where she laughed with people who actually liked themselves.

Meanwhile, I was drowning in vodka and calling it “coping.” I drank because I was unhappy. Then I stayed unhappy because I drank. That cycle almost killed me. 

The day I finally drove myself to detox, I sat in the parking lot for four hours taking shots—liquid courage just to walk through those doors. I reeked of booze, shook like hell, and finally admitted I couldn’t do it alone anymore. Meanwhile, my ex-boyfriend from decades prior, Tom, sat in his tow truck next to my car just waiting for me to be ready because he was the one taking my Lexus and storing it in his yard while I got well.

Sobriety didn’t erase my shame or my past, but it gave me something Christin had that I was too drunk to see: a chance. If you know what it’s like to watch someone else’s peace from the outside, or if you white-knuckled your way into a building you swore you’d never need, this one’s yours.
